"The Sport of Schutzhund successfully showcases all aspects of training and competition, but more importantly, it celebrates the joy of dogs at work and the enduring bond between dog and owner. Other books about Schutzhund are technical manuals that might not convey the true spirit of the sport, but the innovative graphic presentation of this book manages to communicate a surprising amount of information. The sequential photos of Schutzhund training techniques and practice sessions are especially intriguing and informative. The Sport of Schutzhund is a great introduction for anyone interested in trying this sport. Lovers of canine action photography will also find it irresistible."

"Beautifully organized and presented, this singularly unique, 250-page[sic], full-sized coffee table paper back is especially recommended to the attention of dog fanciers in general, and Schutzhund owners in particular."
Editor’s Note: The book contains 202 pages, not including the covers.

"Schutzhund, a dog sport developed in Germany in the early 1900s, is a training that is applied to popular working dogs - German Shepherds mainly. This magnificent book illustrates this Dog Sport so well with its simply stunning photography and insight.

As soon as I began this I was captured...Of course this book isn’t just full of pictures of magnificence, it is mainly to show us just how clever, intelligent and skilful working dogs can be when trained by the sport of Schutzhund.

The photographs show the step-by-step phases...so you really can get a good idea what is involved if you are a dog owner and fancy a go at this sport yourself. Or you may just be a big lover of animals like myself and savour each page and the intellectual side of these dogs too as illustrated in this book.

I cannot express how wonderful this book is but will say it is an excellent introduction to this sport with colourful photographs taken by professional and amateur photographers alike. Also there are some photographs from Europe too. If you weren’t inspired before you looked through this collection - you certainly will be once you have!

Words are simply not enough to convey what a wonderful collection of photographs are inside this book and would look so great on your coffee table. The dogs inside, one word - beautiful! I just completely fell in love with them. A wonderful book in every way. "

"In my opinion, this book is the best pictorial depiction of the sport of Schutzhund to date and the best contribution to promoting Schutzhund ever."

Chuck Norton, Dublin Canyon Shepherd Dog Club, California
"The beauty of your book is that it accurately captures the ‘club’ spirit and the pictures of the handlers and dogs having fun. I keep the book on ‘display’ handy for all who enter my house so they can see what I have been doing every Saturday since June 1978. I wish there was a pocket size copy I could carry with me to show folks who ask about my hobby. My compliments to you."

"It’s a beautiful pictorial essay capturing the spirit and soul of SchH [Schutzhund]. I look at the photos and see something different every time - a subtle look by the handler, a joyous expression by the dog. Your book talks about SchH [Schutzhund] without words in a concise, enjoyable yet understanding way. The photos provide a wealth of learning for anyone who really ‘sees into’ the expressions, movements and positions."

"I love it!! What a lovely book and great tribute to our wonderful dogs and the dedicated handlers (and spectators too!)"

"A lovely book. I’ve shown it to a number of friends who know that I participate in Schutzhund, but have never observed Schutzhund training or trials. It provides them with a clearer understanding of the discipline and what I’m actually doing when I’m off for all of those hours with the dogs. They also view the dogs with renewed respect."

"When I saw the cover of the well-done The Sport of Schutzhund book with the photo of the GS doing just that, it struck home. Authors BJ and Peter Spanos have poured their love of the Schutzhund sport into this fascinating, glossy, photographic book that covers the entire world of training and competing in this area. Just as it’s beautiful to see a human athlete at the peak of his or her sport, it’s the same feeling watching a Schutzhund-trained dog compete. The dogs are fluid, leaping over barriers, tracking smells, attacking on command (nobody gets hurt!). The photos that the 26 photographers contributed to this book catch the dogs in all areas of training and in all the ways they interact with their humans. And the dogs love it. That’s the most beautiful part of all."

"The dogs pictured in this book are athletes all, at the peak of their game, and competing in the dog version of the iron man, or the triathlon. Without exception, they are focused, intent on their mission – and they are having a whale of a good time. Nothing matters to them, save their mission, and the affection rewarded to them by their human afterwards. They know nothing of ribbons and records. It’s their human handlers who generally look anxious. This is a lovely and detailed book, both as an introduction to a relatively unknown sport, and an affectionate tribute to our oldest and most dedicated friend – the working dog."

"I have a dog. Her particular skill set includes inhaling her food, sleeping on the couch, sleeping on the bed, sleeping under the bed (in the event of thunderstorms) and begging. The gorgeous dogs portrayed in the coffee table book, The Sport of Schutzhund: A Photographic Essay, are slightly more ambitious than that...The hundreds of photographs are largely wonderful, showing the strength and skill of these animal athletes; the few pictures that are obviously taken by amateurs more than compensate for lack of photographic experience by an abundance of love for their subjects. "I feel as though the book is wonderful for those that are active in Schutzhund sport currently, and it has been great for people that do not know the sport as well. It is important for all people to be able to see what the dogs are capable of doing in Schutzhund as well as the incredible character the dogs performing Schutzhund have. The children’s investment in training Schutzhund with the dogs and the dogs’ incredible desire to work for the children in the sport of Schutzhund is a great visual for people to see and to appreciate how awesome the sport is and the temperament and intelligence and trainability of the dogs that work in Schutzhund."

"I purchased this book for a puppy buyer of mine who has started into some Schutzhund training with her Groenendael. She’s competed in Schutzhund in the past with Dobermans, and she LOVED the book! The pictures were fabulous, and she felt it really captured the sense of teamwork that Schutzhund requires. The bite work is only a part and the obedience and tracking photos are great as well. It sits on her coffee table in her living room for all to see! Great book!"
