About BJ Spanos BJ Spanos

As a veteran communications professional with more than 25 years of wide-ranging experience, BJ is passionate about delivering quality work on time and within budget. She has been complimented for her ability to present very complex material for any reading level and for her thorough research capabilities. Other hallmarks of BJ’s career are her professionalism, dedication to her clients and her love of the written word.

Recently, she has developed a love of Dog Sport (Schutzhund) photography and is dedicated to the art of Schutzhund photography as a way to promote the sport. She and her husband, Peter, created a coffee table book, which displays in rich color 370 photographs, taken by BJ and 25 amateur and professional photographers in the US, plus a few pictures from Europe. They are donating the net proceeds to Dog Sport (Schutzhund).

BJ has written extensively about indoor air quality (IAQ) issues and analyzed industry trends for more than 15 years, including sustainable (green) building, construction defects, mold and risk management, productivity and IAQ, chemical and biologic indoor air pollutants, and allergies and asthma. She wrote an executive summary of a comprehensive research project on the energy, temperature and moisture control performance of exterior claddings, including EIFS, brick, stucco and cementitious siding for the EIFS Industry Members Association (EIMA). The project was co-sponsored by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, US Department of Energy and EIMA. She also researched and authored a landmark publication, Mold: Cause, Effect and Response, on mold in construction, and served as editor of INVIRONMENT® Professional, a monthly newsletter (no longer published) that reported on news, trends, technologies, products and issues impacting indoor environments.

BJ spent six years working with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), where she edited the Society’s position paper and statement on Legionella and legionellosis and other technical and educational presentations. She co-authored Proclaiming the Truth, a hardbound history of the Society. In addition, she wrote more than 300 speeches for the Society’s president and board of directors, developed and implemented communications plans for the ASHRAE’s biannual international meetings, co-sponsored conferences, and efforts to promote Society activities in developing high-profile industry standards.

During her career as a professional writer and editor of technical, medical and scientific information, BJ has authored numerous technical articles and has edited several books and periodicals. BJ’s creativity is not limited to technical information. She also is a skilled speaker coach, an experienced small group facilitator and offers training on how to run effective and productive meetings. In addition, she has created several newsletters from initial concept to printed piece, including a monthly newsletter for St. Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism - Science Communications.
